A public website the college staff can update themselves

Government Dental College & Hospital, Vijayawada

Government Dental College and Hospital, Vijayawada needed a public website that its own staff could keep up to date - without calling a developer every time a notice, a photograph or a phone number changed.

The problem

The college already had a good-looking website, but everything on it was fixed in the code. Adding one notification meant editing files and re-publishing the site. Government notices, results and reports arrive throughout the year, so the site was always a little behind.

What we built

  • Home page slideshow - staff add, reorder, switch off or remove the banner images themselves.
  • Photo gallery - upload event photographs and arrange them by album and order.
  • Department pages - each department has its own page with text and a header image that can be edited at any time.
  • Faculty directory - name, designation, qualification, photograph, email and contact number for every member of staff.
  • Notifications - upload a PDF and it appears on the Notifications page; tick one box and it also runs in the scrolling ticker under the menu.
  • Reports - a separate page for official reports, so notices and reports do not get mixed up.
  • Admin login - a small set of trusted logins, with passwords stored safely and sessions that expire.

How it helps

  • A notice reaches the public in minutes instead of days.
  • Photographs are resized and optimised automatically, so the site stays fast even on a mobile connection.
  • Notifications and reports share one storage area behind the scenes, so new categories such as tenders or circulars can be added later without new code.
  • No technical knowledge is needed - the panel is plain forms and drag-to-reorder lists.

Technology

A React front end for the public site and the admin panel, an Express and MySQL back end, image processing on upload, and secure token-based login. Files are stored on the college server rather than a third-party service.
